Like it! The ShopToEarth Business Model and the People By Hilary Martin

The business model is brilliant, but simple, and I love that we’re raising environmental awareness. I’ve been an online shopper for years and remember when Microsoft first launched their cash back beta program, Live.com. Cash back for online shopping is obvious to me, and combining it with an earth friendly “Green Mall” is the reason I am here.

I also love the people associated with ShopToEarth. I am grateful to work hand-in-hand with such passionate and hard working people. The friends I’ve made in ShopToEarth will last a lifetime.

Living Green is Easy, Try Walking the Eco-Life By Hilary Martin

Just about everything I do from the time I wake up in the morning until going to bed at night is green. I wake up to Fair Trade Coffee, Kiss My Face toothpaste and Key Naturals Skincare. You can find coffee and salsa containers “reused” around my house for various things, ShopToEarth H2Go bottle or Water Week bottles to the gym (love them both) and more.

I absolutely LOVE the Salad Sac from Sustainable Table! I rinse my spinach pour into the Salad Sac then toss in the fridge. You’d be amazed at how long everything stays fresh, probably 3 times as long as keeping it in the plastic salad bags, loose or in containers. My animals eat all natural as well. LOVE Joint Check by People Pets and Horses!  I recently moved and had to call the city for extra recycle bins. If it can be recycled, I recycle it. My next project is to start a new compost garden.

Tell us some things you do to shop green:

I love Trader Joe’s!  I always use reusable grocery bags. If you don’t want to break the bank purchasing all organic fruits and veggies, read up on which fruits and veggies are the most important to buy organic then purchase a Fruit and Veggie Wash from your Green Mall to help with the rest.  I try to buy Fair Trade Certified as much as possible, it’s very important. If you’re not familiar with Fair Trade Certified Products, please educate yourself.

On my shopping list you’ll find:

•    Sun and Earth Laundry Detergent
•    Key Naturals, Vital Fruits, Kiss My Face Lavender body lotion
•    Elephant Poo Pads (great gifts and awesome conversation piece to promote your STE Business),
•    Crazy Pineapples Candles, they smell delicious and last longer/don’t cause sneezing or irritation like standard candles. Amazing!
•    Sustainable Table – love it all!

Going, Going, Going….Green on ShopToEarth. Just Do It says Hilary Martin

Ever wonder how other people in the ShopToEarth network are going green? Hilary Martin, ShopToEarth’s Director of Marketing, gives us the scoop on how ShopToEarth helped her go green and passes along tips on what you can do to add more green to your life.

What are some easy ways people can start shopping green?

Start with the basics. Think of the things you use on a weekly and monthly basis that don’t require changing your routine. For example, paper towels, toilet paper, cleaning products and laundry supplies. These are all things we use weekly that you can start switching out for greener alternatives. Sun & Earth for example, has a wonderful eco friendly laundry detergent that is extremely affordable!

Name some great eco leaders who inspire you:

Ed Begley, Jr is an obvious one. I first met Ed in 2006 after listening to one of his inspiring speeches during an Eco Conference in California. The second would be Jill Buck. Jill is the Founder of the Go Green Initiative and she is, by far, one of the most passionate and giving people I’ve met. Jill has accomplished many great things with the GGI, which is helping thousands of schools and children across the nation raise environmental awareness. One of the most exceptional experiences I’ve had working in the “green world” was the GGI 2008 Earth Summit in Syracuse. Jill produced a top notch Earth Summit with some of the nations leading environmental activists. I was able to attend lectures from national eco leaders from the NRC, Time Incorporated and the USGBC, I’m also a fan of Sara Snow. Sara grew up living green, as her father was the co-founder of Eden Foods. She is a true inspiration!

Last book you read:

Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert....and I highly recommend it! “Eat in Italy, Pray in India, Love in Indonesia...great humor, insight and charm!”

Timing is Everything says ShopToEarth National Trainer, Rich Soviero

Time Management Tips

The old saying, “Time is money,” still rings true, especially when running your eco-friendly ShopToEarth network. The beauty of ShopToEarth, it actually saves time, notes ShopToEarth’s National Trainer, Rich Soviero.

“Online shopping with ShopToEarth saves an incredible amount of time! We purchase everything possible through our Website, the only time we have to shop in a physical store is for groceries,” says Soviero. “Instead of walking through Costco or Target on the weekends, we now order from the comfort of our homes, and it is delivered right to our door.”

Stop wishing for more time to do the things you enjoy! Check out Rich’s Time Management Tips below to start making the most of being a ShopToEarth representative.

Rich's Top Three Time Management Tips:

1. Modeling: Figure out your schedule with an end result in mind

2. Define your time: Think about the various activities in your life and group them together

3. Replace Multi-tasking with Uni-tasking: Do one task at a time to improve concentration and allow yourself to get more done in less time

Daily Time Management Routine:

I plan out my day in advance with a focus on completing my daily goals, crossing them off as they are completed. It keeps me focused all day long no matter what else comes up.

When you procrastinate, what do you find yourself doing?

I hate to procrastinate, but I do find myself doing it occasionally with things that are painful for me to do. I find myself ignoring it and pretending its not there.

How do you avoid procrastination?

With me it’s all about mindset and being determined to hit another goal.

Words of Wisdom on Time Management:

Make daily, weekly and monthly goals: The key is to write them down and stay focused on these goals. Put them in front of you in the car, on your mirror, at your desk just to help keep you focused.

Tools for Time Management that you use or recommend?

My best tool is my phone where I keep my lists and it alerts me to all upcoming events.

ShopToEarth Success Tips, Tools and Advice on The Little Big Things

by Dan Swiniarski
Tom Peters began his “Success Tips” blog back in the early 2000s, and today Tom continues to push out basic, fundamental, simple and time-proven teachings for success.
There isn’t anything in this book that is earth shattering or “off-the-charts” new and innovating, but what you will find is tons of information you can take, use and win with, should you adopt, adapt and get off the couch NOW!
“The Little Big Things” is not going to be the easiest read, nor is it going to be a book you will finish quickly, but you will find page after page of incredibly SIMPLE and useful tips, tools and advice. Not to mention you will get the feeling Tom is actually speaking to and challenging you.
Toms preaching of simple things are spread throughout this little gem. Wisdom like show up and show appreciation. Or, “People first, people second, people third, people infinity.” Reward excellent failures.
And a couple of my favorites:
“Devote adequate time to self-development”

“To do much with an idea, you need an ATTITUDE.”
So if you are really ready to get off the couch, shut off the TV and do something about where you are with YOU INC., I recommend you pick up this book along with a ledger and start reading immediately.

Start acting on the little big things.

ShopToEarth Social Circles Grow with Social Media What’s Next?

By Lisa Buyer @lisabuyer on Twitter

Watching the ShopToEarth social circles grow online over the past few years is exciting and rewarding. It’s hard to believe many of ShopToEarth’s social media networks were launched less than 18 months ago, and now it seems a daily routine for us to wake up and check-in on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and most recently Foursquare!

Lisa Buyer Likes this!
We just hit the one-year anniversary of our Social Media Happy Hour Webinars, and speaking of anniversaries: YouTube just turned 5 years old! When we started the ShopToEarth Facebook Fan Page in January 2009, Facebook had 150 million users; today they’re pushing to 500 million users! Twitter started in 2006, and today has more than 100 million users sending 55 million Tweets a day. When ShopToEarth started on Twitter in January 2009, we were one of about 1 million users! 300,000 new users are joining each day!

The eco-friendly ShopToEarth network is an early adapter to social media, embracing it as a means to network and build relationships, and I’m happy to be able to share in this growth.

What’s next?
Now we have Foursquare checkins, bringing our network to a new geo-centric way of networking and adding to our eco-friendly way of shopping, saving and earning. With Foursquare we can share tips on places to go and see from city to city. Social media makes the world smaller, and I’m thankful to be part of the ShopToEarth social circle!

My next book:
If you are looking for a good read, check out The Facebook Effect: The Inside Story of the Company That is Connecting the World.

My next conference:
Search Engine Strategies Toronto, Canada - I will be speaking on the panel: Search, PR and the Social Butterfly and teaching a clinic: How to Socialize Your Website

My next vacation:
Seaside, Florida

My next concert:
Justin Beiber (with my daughter Kennedy)

My next movie:
Eat Pray Love

How Effortless Action = Success in Life and ShopToEarth Business

by ShopToEarth’s Julio Varela

Accomplish more, by trying less. This can be construed as a thought that goes against the principle of “No Pain, No Gain,” completely contrary to “You have to work HARD to make things happen,” and “The harder I work the luckier I get.” I’m sure you get the point.
When you discover the power of “Effortless Action” and eliminate expectancies from your life, the result is action without attachment to outcome. You will be accepting every result of your actions and choices for what they turn out to be, not what you might want them to be. In other words, “It is what it is,” and you continue forward.
Understand that you can act without the implied judgment of words such as effort or trying. You can compete without being focused on outcome.  Eliminating opposites paradoxically unifies them so that it is unnecessary to identify with one position.
You go into unquestionable action. You react immediately to whatever it is you are going to do. You don’t procrastinate. You do it without even thinking about doing it!
The joy is in the constant doing at your own point of reality.  Your present, your NOW has unquestionable power built upon your 100% trust that whatever the outcome is, it is not controlled by you, and when that outcome materializes whether in seconds, hours, weeks, month or years, it has already been accepted by you as the outcome that is supposed to be.
Don’t try to do the business, just do the business when you have decided to do the business. Remember Shakespeare and “The best laid plans of mice and men?”
Don’t spend time trying to manipulate the outcome of an event, just use your free will to decide what you want to do in that precise moment of the present, and allow your inexhaustible source to provide it to you in whatever form that it might reveal itself.
In other words, accept it if it happens that exact way you wanted it to happen, or equally accept it if it happens in a totally different manner, or even if it doesn’t happen at all!
For in the scheme of eternity, who are we to question the importance of one single act, while at the same time appreciate the power one single miniscule action can have in the shifting fabric of eternity through our thoughts or actions?
Balancing your business life with your spiritual life always in front, is the way to achieve harmony and peace of mind. Enjoy and just be you.

The Business Power of Breaks and Brainstorming @ShopToEarth

by ShopToEarth’s Erin Welsh

An important aspect of being a good leader, and often overlooked, is you have to take breaks to clear the mind and rejuvenate.

I’ve found myself over the last two years getting obsessed with completing the job, instead of realizing there is always going to be a huge workload and telling myself, “Take a break already!”

I think this is important no matter your career or what your life is like. We are at our best when we take time for ourselves, whether it’s a long weekend, hanging out with family, going to a concert or just a simple workout.

This is something I have really had to work on and really never realized it until the last two years. Funny, right? I have to work on not working so much!

But slowly I have understood I am at my best when I take a little time to decompress and enjoy things like yoga, laughter, being outside in the sunshine, live music, my family and my friends.

The ShopToEarth Cruise was a great way for me to decompress and enjoy the wonderful people making a huge impact on STE’s mission. It doesn’t get any better than taking your first ride on a scooter with your big brother Pat! That will clear your head no doubt!

Brainstorming – Four Heads are Better than One
Another thing I am very passionate about in business is brainstorming sessions. I am a firm believer in the idea that four heads are better than one to make an idea or program the best it can be.

ShopToEarth is at its best when we incorporate opinions and feedback from the leaders in the field, Customer Support Staff, Shannon Beck and Hilary Martin’s Sales and Marketing perspective, Pat’s Visionary perspective, and always ideas from the programming and technical side.

Listening and realizing that everyone’s input is important because perspectives are meant to be different, and multiple perspectives are very valuable.

So use your head to take your ShopToEarth green business to the next level. Give your brain a break every now and then, and rely on collective thoughts of those around to plan and succeed!

ShopToEarth: 97% of Consumers Research Products Online

by Pat Welsh, founder of ShopToEarth

I love reading articles that confirm and validate the ShopToEarth business model!

According to new research from BIA/Kelsey Group, 97% of consumers are now researching products and future purchases online. The study also found 90% of consumers are utilizing search engines, 42% are using comparison shopping engines to research purchases and nearly 25% are using vertical shopping websites.

Consumers' increasing sense of ease with online shopping is a positive indicator for ShopToEarth. As shoppers turn to the Internet to research products; our eco-friendly e-commerce solution offers safe and reliable places to shop smart and become an eco-conscious consumer.

At ShopToEarth, we take great pride in knowing we are part of the solution. Through our eco-network, we are harnessing the power of the Internet and improving the long-term viability of our oceans, forests, drinking water and air quality. Everything about ShopToEarth has your success and the success of our planet in mind.

ShopToEarth Learns from Zappos: Culture is Everything!

No big corner offices in this real world. Only culture.
In a world where a lack of discipline, ethics, and integrity seem to be headline news, it’s becoming more important to point out those doing it right; and Zappo’s is one of those companies…doing things right.

Lisa Buyer and I had the opportunity to hear Tony Hseih talk about Zappos happiness culture when he was a keynote speaker at PubCon Las Vegas 2009, inspiring  me to visit  Zappo’s Las Vegas headquarters a couple times in the last year and come away thoroughly impressed.

They had me at ‘Hello’!
From the minute you walk into the front door and into the not necessarily neat (but clean and spunky) reception area (read memorabilia area), you feel that the Zappo’s culture of “Delivering Happiness” is alive and well. Then the same Zen-like feeling continues as you start the approx. one-hour tour through the memory lane-like marketing department, product development department, sales departments , human resources and customer service department, and are introduced to and interact with as many Zappos’s employees as you like.

Best suits, no suit
I even had the opportunity to sit at CEO Tony Hsieh’s desk which is in clear view of all the employees as are the other execs in the company.  No BIG-CORNER offices for these guys. Nobody was wearing a suit; everybody was dressed casual, very relaxed, and comfortable (yet focused and happy).  There were many other nuances I found impressive about Zappo’s, like relaxed support-rep call procedures…. just make the customer happy, and the nap room. I took many things away from the experience that will benefit me and others moving forward.

My suggestion: If you visit Las Vegas, save time for a Zap from Zappos, a must!  Schedule a tour of the Zappo’s headquarters in Las Vegas (it’s free and very inspirational) if you get the chance.  You will more than likely come away with a different outlook than you went in with. Culture shock at its best.
Follow Tony on Twitter @zappos, I do!

Why Read Linchpin? Get Ahead, Get Noticed, Get Paid More

I just finished reading Linchpin: Are You Indispensable? by Seth Godin.  This book, with out a doubt, will be the defining point in many peoples lives. If you are looking to get ahead, get noticed at your job, get paid more, you need to become a Linchpin. This book was a perfect read to follow Drive: by Daniel Pink.
Linchpin will give all who read it the understanding that we are all capable of achieving genius, that we are all able of accomplishing anything we want, once we understand that we are really not AVERAGE and need to find our creativeness that institutionalized education has hidden deep inside us.  How is it the dreams we all had as children are gone when we have completed the required education handed down to us from generations past?
If you are an employer, employee, or are concerned with the future ahead and are interested in becoming more than average, indespencible, a Linchpin, this is a must read.
You can pick up Linchpin on your ShopToEarth "My Retail Mall" at Borders or BooksaMillion.

One Hour with ShopToEarth’s Hilary Martin

ShopToEarth Director of Marketing, Hilary Martin hosted an Earth Hour event in St. Louis, Missouri at Van Goghz Restaurant.

"The energy and support from everyone at Van Goghz was fantastic! At approximately 9:40 we went to blow the candles out and turn the lights back on, but many people preferred we leave them off for a little longer. That was a neat moment for me. To raise environmental awareness about conserving energy, while doing something as fun and easy as spending time together in the candlelight. In writing a follow up Press Release, I found the perfect quote,"

Great things are done by a series of small things brought together
Vincent Van Gogh

"Watch for upcoming news on how others celebrated Earth Hour," said Martin.

Good Read: ShopToEarth's Dan Swiniarski Reviews ‘Drive’ by Daniel Pink

By Dan Swiniarki, ShopToEarth President

I just finished reading Daniel Pink's new book "Drive".  In this book, Pink does a great job of breaking down motivation and how people respond to certain stimuli. In the book Pink shows that traditional monetary motivation is losing its gusto in the market as more and more companies (Google) allow their people creative freedom and autonomy on projects.  Some companies even allow their employees to work in different departments as long as they create something tangible.

There were several examples that showed when compensation was applied to a task, interest as well as artistic creativity were hampered considerably. Throughout the book Pink gives examples as well as case studies that can be applied to all levels of learning.

If you run a company, or work for a company, you have to read this book.
Understanding the principles Pink brings will allow you to drive your staff or yourself to new heights.

You can buy it via your Retail Mall on ShopToEarth.net

ShopToEarth Mark ups? Question and Answer

At ShopToEarth, we promote green thinking and saving. We always like to share questions that others come to us with; along with our answers…This is a copy of a question and answer from the ShopToEarth Facebook Fan Page Discussion Board.

Question from ShopToEarth representative:
I recently received an objection from a potential broker because of the price mark-ups on the Shop to Earth side. Evidently, the prices directly from the Vendor were at times - almost half the cost of the prices listed on ShopToEarth side. And even the My Retail Mall side was less expensive for the same product on the ShoptoEarth side. Please let me know how to handle this objection. How can we tell people to shop and make their $50.00 on the ShopToEarth side if they know their being overcharged?

ShopToEarth Answer
We are continually working on improving our pricing for Green Mall products. In fact, we just recently slashed prices for all Green Horizon products by 5%. The more volume we sell, the better pricing we will be able to offer. There is also some great information in your Training Center->FAQ's that will help you address this objection. STE

ShopToEarth Helps Haiti

We’re all touched by this terrible disaster in Haiti.  Every hour continues to unfold and plea for our humanitarian support. Although this is not a matter of helping in the next hours, days or weeks, this unprecedented disaster in Haiti will be a matter of months and years to recover.

Yesterday President Obama and two former Presidents Bush and Clinton joined forces to announce the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund to help raise money for Haitians. Key messages from this triple presidential humanitarian effort we want to remind everyone.
  1. Make sure you give through an organization that is reputable and will pass your dollars to Haiti in the most responsible way
  2. Haiti needs cash more than anything to help this global situation
The ShopToEarth Foundation is reaching out for your immediate attention. If you have not contributed to the relief efforts yet here are a few agencies ShopToEarth endorses and partners with. We acknowledge that many great organizations are gathering funds an in-kind donations for Haiti. Here are a few that STEFoundation is working closely with.
  1. Charity Water
  2. Mission Haiti
